What Is Bang Bang Sauce?

Bang Bang sauce is an addictive, creamy, sweet, and spicy sauce. It’s mayonnaise-based and goes perfectly with meat, seafood, and veggies. The traditional recipe is made with Thai sweet chili sauce, mayonnaise, and sriracha, and is a super popular Bonefish Grill bang bang shrimp appetizer, but is actually surprisingly easy to recreate at home!

I adapted this recipe to be a little more lifestyle friendly and I’m proud to share that my homemade version is keto, paleo, whole30, dairy-free and gluten-free! It is just as delicious, but now everyone can enjoy it!

Also, it’s not just bang bang shrimp sauce. It can be used for a variety of meats, veggies, seafood, noodles, salad, and more!

Recipe Highlights

How to Make Bang Bang Sauce

This recipe has just a few simple ingredients and takes about 2 minutes to combine and serve! The shrimp appetizer takes just 30 minutes from start to finish. Make one or both!

Ingredient Notes

Bang Bang Sauce

  • Mayo or Greek yogurt: You can use my 60-second mayonnaise recipe or a store-bought version. If preferred, use greek yogurt!
  • Sriracha: Use less or more depending on the desired spice level.
  • Rice vinegar
  • Coconut aminos: I use this instead of honey. It has a sweetness to it and adds a lot of flavor to the sauce.
  • Salt and Pepper: Use to taste.
  • Garlic powder
  • Thai Sweet chili sauce: Yai’s Thai Sweet Chili Sauce is Whole30 approved. If you aren’t Whole30, feel free to use your favorite brand.

Shrimp (optional)

  • Shrimp: I used jumbo shrimp, deveined and peeled.
  • Olive oil: Avocado oil will also work.
  • Salt and pepper: Use to taste.
  • Green onions: Garnish the shrimp appetizer with chopped green onions, if desired.

Recipe FAQs

What is Bang Bang Sauce made of?

The classic recipe has just three ingredients- Thai sweet chili sauce, sriracha, and mayonnaise. My version is made with a healthy and lifestyle-friendly twist, but tastes just as good!

Can I make this sauce sweeter?

If you’d like some extra sweetness, try an all-natural sweetener like maple syrup or honey. This will exclude it from being keto or Whole30, but it’s still a healthier alternative.

Can I make this sauce spicier?

Yes! Add more sriracha to give more of a kick.
