What is a Mojito?
A classic mojito is a classic Cuban cocktail that is a popular drink in bars and restaurants around the world. A traditional mojito is made with white rum, lime juice, sugar, soda water, and fresh mint leaves. However, many unique versions have been created!
There are so many versions of mojitos with twists on this classic beverage. These variations feature different flavors and fresh ingredients and are always beautiful drinks! Here are some popular variations of this favorite drink:
- Fruity: These feature the addition of fresh fruit such as strawberries, raspberries, mango, or pineapple. The fruit is muddled along with the mint leaves to add extra flavor and sweetness.
- Spiced: Some versions include the addition of spices such as cinnamon, ginger, or clove to give a warm and comforting flavor.
- Coconut mojitos: These are made with coconut rum or coconut cream, which gives the cocktail a creamy and tropical flavor.
- Frozen: Frozen mojitos are made by blending the ingredients together with ice, creating a slushy, blended version.
- Non-alcoholic mojitos: Also known as “mocktails” or “virgin,” these are made without the addition of rum or other alcohol. All the same delicious flavors without the alcohol.
For this strawberry mojito recipe, we are focusing on the virgin mojito mocktail! While you can always add alcohol to this, it’s absolutely delicious as a non-alcoholic beverage for guests who don’t consume alcohol or even kids who want to have a special summer drink!
What is a Mocktail?
A mocktail is a non-alcoholic cocktail. It is usually made with a combination of fruit juices, syrups, herbs, and other ingredients that are commonly used in cocktails but without any alcohol.
Mocktails can be served on the rocks, blended with ice, or shaken and strained like a traditional cocktail. They are often served as a refreshing and healthier alternative to alcoholic beverages or as a non-alcoholic option that is still fun to drink!

Ingredient Notes
Mocktail Version
- Strawberries: If you only have frozen strawberries, feel free to thaw them for about 30 minutes at room temperature, then use them as directed.
- Diced pineapple: Feel free to use a can of diced pineapples and then save the leftover juice for the rest of the drink. Or you can use freshly diced pineapple and a bottle of pineapple juice.
- Mint leaves
- Fresh Lime juice: I recommend using fresh limes instead of bottled lime juice.
- Pineapple juice
- Simple syrup: Or natural sweetener of choice. You can also use agave syrup, maple syrup, or monk fruit sweetener if preferred.
- Lemon lime Zevia: You can also use Sprite, lemon or lime seltzer water, plain carbonated water, or club soda. Keep in mind you may need to adjust the simple syrup if using unsweetened sparkling water.
- Strawberry sugar: I have this amazing homemade recipe for strawberry sugar that makes the most delicious rim!
Cocktail Version
- White Rum or Coconut Rum: I like to make my cocktail version with Malibu rum, but feel free to use a white rum like Bacardi or your favorite brand. It’s a refreshing drink with or without alcohol!
Step-by-Step instructions
- Add the strawberries, pineapple, mint, and lime juice to a tall glass. Muddle together until everything is broken up and combined.
- To this mixture, add the pineapple juice along with ice. Mix the glass with the Zevia with a long cocktail spoon. Garnish with fresh mint and a pineapple slice.
- Optional: before building your drink, you can rim the glass with my Strawberry Sugar to add a special touch.

- Non-Alcoholic Rum: If you want the rum flavor without any alcohol, there are companies that make “zero-proof” spirits. You can find these online, at grocery stores, and at specialty liquor stores. They are a great addition to a non-alcoholic drink because they make a super flavorful mojito without any of the effects.
