This homemade Big Mac sauce recipe is the perfect condiment to have on hand. Packed with protein for a healthy spin on the McDonald’s classic, this sauce is the ultimate copycat!
What Makes This Recipe Great
If you’ve ever had a McDonald’s Big Mac, you know that this famous burger has a distinct sauce that is absolutely delicious. Today, I’m sharing a high-protein version of the beloved Big Mac Sauce, and I know you are going to love it!
The recipe for McDonald’s special sauce has never been officially released. In fact, according to their website, “ the coveted Big Mac Sauce recipe has now been fine-tuned (and uncracked by fans, chefs or food bloggers) for 50+ years.” But what they do tell you is the ingredients list, and it’s not great:
“Ingredients: Soybean Oil, Sweet Relish (diced Pickles, Sugar, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Distilled Vinegar, Salt, Corn Syrup, Xanthan Gum, Calcium Chloride, Spice Extractives), Water, Egg Yolks, Distilled Vinegar, Spices, Onion Powder, Salt, Propylene Glycol Alginate, Garlic Powder, Vegetable Protein (hydrolyzed Corn, Soy And Wheat), Sugar, Caramel Color, Turmeric, Extractives Of Paprika, Soy Lecithin.”
So, while we may not have cracked their secret code, I promise you this version is pretty darn close, absolutely delicious, and only contains ingredients you can pronounce! It’s a versatile sauce you can use to make a homemade classic Big Mac Burger or Big Mac Salad Bowls or use it as a dip for chicken nuggets, french fries, onion rings, and more!

- Dill pickles: You can also use sweet pickle relish or dill pickle relish if desired.

- Splash of Worcestershire sauce
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Add all the sauce ingredients except the chopped pickles to a food processor and blend until smooth. Once blended, add in the pickles and mix with a spoon until combined.
Mac’s Pro Tip
Expert Tips
- If desired, you can swap out the cottage cheese and replace it with Greek yogurt or mayonnaise. Just keep in mind that your substitutions may change the protein content.
- You can omit the ketchup, as this is not an ingredient in McDonald’s Big Mac sauce, but I find that it adds even more flavor, and I love the taste of the sauce with it.
- If you want to re-create a “Big Mac,” you’ll need shredded iceberg lettuce, two thin ground beef patties, dill pickle slices, American cheese, diced and grilled white onion, and a sesame seed bun (1 top bun and 2 bottom buns). Cook your patties in whichever method you prefer, then assemble the burger stacked from the bottom to the top:
- bottom bun, sauce, shredded lettuce, slice of American cheese, burger patty, extra bottom bun, sauce, shredded lettuce, dill pickle slices, burger patty, cheese, diced grilled onions, top bun slathered with more homemade sauce.
Serving Tips
Use this sauce in this Big Mac Casserole, this Big Mac Salad, as a burger sauce, sandwich spread, dipping sauce, salad dressing, and more!
Storage Tips
Store in an airtight container or mason jar with a lid in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. It may last even longer; be sure to check for spoilage before using.

Just the recipe I was looking for! This copycat Big Mac sauce is the best and so simple to make.
Thanks Maddie! So glad you enjoyed it
Can the mayo be completely omitted? I have an egg intolerance and vegan mayo has some unpleasant seed oils.
For sure. You can omit and just use Greek yogurt or cottage cheese 😉
