Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Y’all, I’m not exaggerating, this might just be the best recipe I’ve ever made. I know that sounds dramatic, but once you take a bite, you’ll see exactly what I mean. It’s everything you love about the classic flavors of a Big Mac, just baked into a fork-friendly dish that’s a hit with the whole family.

It’s also so much healthier than a fast food run. I used lean ground beef, a homemade high-protein Big Mac sauce, and even added sweet potatoes to boost the nutrition. And if you’re watching your carbs, it’s super simple to turn this into a keto Big Mac casserole by skipping the potatoes altogether.

Big Mac casserole ingredients arranged in labeled bowls, including olive oil, ground beef, shredded lettuce, pickles, sweet potatoes, shredded cheese, tomatoes, onion, worcestershire sauce, seasonings, and garlic.

  • Lean ground beef: The hearty base of our casserole. You can also sub in ground turkey.
  • Yellow or white onion: Adds sweetness and flavor to the beef mixture.
  • Minced garlic: Rounds out the aromatics beautifully.
  • Worcestershire sauce: Adds rich, savory depth. (Use gluten-free if needed!)
  • Spices: Garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and ground mustard bring that unmistakable “burger” flavor.
  • Sweet potatoes: I used these for a healthier twist, but crispy tater tots, russet potatoes, or even French fries will work too!
  • Shredded cheddar cheese: Melty cheese heaven. You can also use your favorite cheese blend.
  • Shredded lettuce, cherry tomatoes, and dill pickles: The classic toppings take this casserole over the top.
  • Homemade burger sauce: This big mac sauce is a homemade blend of cottage cheese (or Greek yogurt), mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, chopped pickles or dill relish, and seasoning. It’s creamy, tangy, and tastes just like thousand island dressing.

How to Make Big Mac Casserole

Step-by-step cooking process shots showing how to sauté beef, prep potatoes, and layer the Big Mac casserole.

Step 1: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Sauté the sweet potato cubes (or your potato of choice) in a bit of olive oil until fork-tender. For frozen tater tots or fries, cook according to package instructions.

Step 2: In a separate large skillet, over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef, breaking it up as it browns. Drain excess grease. Stir in ¾ cup diced onions and garlic. Cook until the onion is soft and fragrant. Add a splash of Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, mustard powder, salt, and black pepper to the ground beef mixture. Stir to coat.

Step 3: In a greased 9×13 baking dish (or casserole dish), layer the sautéed potatoes and seasoned beef. Drizzle in half the creamy Big Mac sauce and toss to combine.

Step 4: Sprinkle shredded cheese generously over the top of the casserole.

Step 5: Bake for 20-25 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Let cool slightly.

Step 6: Just before serving, top the casserole with shredded lettuce, halved cherry tomatoes, diced pickles, and a drizzle of the remaining Big Mac sauce.

How to Make Big Mac Sauce

Step 1: Add all the sauce ingredients to a food processor and blend until smooth. It should have the color and consistency of Thousand Island dressing. Enjoy!

Incredible. My boyfriend says this is one of his new favorite dinners! I added in some sweet pickled jalapeños to the chopped pickle topping. Also didn’t have any mayo on hand but just used extra Greek yogurt. Worked just fine in a 9×9 dish. So glad to have this in our rotation now!

This was so yummy and easy! I did a lot of quick substitutions due to time and using what I had on hand!
-Ground chicken instead of beef (extra browned)
    -kindred burger sauce (not homemade)
-eye balled the seasoning (bc yolo 🙂
-splash of soy instead of Worcestershire

Turned out great! My particular husband had two bowls! Easy go-to, weekend night meal!
