Ingredient Notes
- Honey: If I’m making a batch for myself, I prefer to use local raw honey from the farmer’s market. However, if you’re making gifts, buying honey in bulk might be a more cost-effective method. It also doesn’t matter if you’re using a darker or lighter color honey or if it is flavored honey. Darker honey may take longer to get to the consistency you want, but it should all whip up into creamy deliciousness.
- Flavorings (optional): Vanilla extract (or a whole vanilla bean), ground cinnamon, lavender syrup, red pepper flakes, grated ginger, citrus zest (lemon, orange, grapefruit, or lime), nutmeg, mint or any combination of these!

Step-By-Step Instructions
Step 1: Pour the honey into the mixing bowl. Using an electric mixer or stand mixer with whisk attachment, whip the honey on high speed for 20-25 minutes. If using an electric mixer, start on low speed to prevent splattering and increase gradually to high speed. As you whip, the honey will turn off-white and get a fluffy, airy texture, and become spreadable.
Step 2: Stop whipping and check the consistency. You can adjust the whipping time based on your preference. If you prefer a thicker consistency, whip for a longer time.
Step 3: Transfer the whipped honey to a clean, airtight jar or container. Store at room temperature for a runnier consistency or in the refrigerator for a thicker consistency. I always store mine in the fridge!
MAC’s pro tips
Expert Tips
- If you want to make a larger batch, it will just take longer to whip the honey to the right consistency.
- If separation occurs, simply stir together with a spoon to combine.
- Allow the honey to reach room temperature before whipping. Warmed honey is more pliable and easier to whip to a creamy consistency.
- Be patient! The whipping process takes time. Be patient and don’t throw in the towel too soon. It will take a good 20-25 minutes to turn light and fluffy.
- If you’re adding flavorings, I have found that less is more! You’ll also want to be careful when adding liquid flavorings as too much of the liquid will thin the honey out.
- Honey’s flavor, texture, and level of sweetness may change after it is whipped.
Serving
Serving Tips
- It is a great addition to charcuterie boards.
- The possibilities are endless when it comes to how to serve this whipped honey! Try it on biscuits, toast, pancakes, or waffles. Mix it into yogurt with fresh berries, use it as a dip for pretzels, or on ice cream as a topping!
- Whipped honey can also be used to sweeten up coffee or your morning tea. It’s also delicious shaken into your favorite cocktail.
- Use in place of regular honey when a baking recipe calls for it.
- Spread on top of butter for an amazing honey butter cornbread topping.
- This whipped honey also makes a great gift in jars with labels and a bow.
Storage
Storage Tips
While not necessary, some people prefer to refrigerate whipped honey to prolong its shelf life. However, refrigeration can cause honey to crystallize more quickly. I am a big fan of storing it in the fridge. It provides a unique texture and I love the cold temperature of the honey.
Store whipped honey in airtight containers to prevent exposure to air, which can cause it to crystallize or change in texture.
Keep whipped honey in a cool, dark place. Exposure to heat and sunlight can alter the consistency and flavor of the honey.

Did You Know?
Different types of honey, like wildflower and clover, bring unique flavors to whipped honey. Wildflower honey has a rich, floral complexity from various blooms, while clover honey is often lighter and milder, letting delicate flavors shine.
The source of nectar and even storage temperature can affect how quickly honey crystallizes—wildflower honey tends to crystallize faster than clover due to its diverse sugar profile, while cooler storage encourages crystallization across all types.
Recipe FAQs
This is honey that has been aerated to create a smooth, creamy consistency. It’s achieved by whipping honey at a controlled temperature until it becomes lighter and spreads easily.
Attempting to whip already crystallized honey may not result in the smooth, creamy consistency typical of whipped honey. However, if you want to return crystallized honey to a liquid state, you can do so by gently warming it. Place the crystallized honey jar in a bowl of warm water or microwave it in short intervals, stirring between each interval until the crystals dissolve. Once the honey returns to a liquid state, you can then try whipping it if desired.
Yes, whipped honey can crystallize over time, especially if refrigerated. This is a natural process and doesn’t necessarily affect the quality. To return it to a smoother consistency, gently warm the honey and re-whip if needed.
If stored properly in an airtight container, whippe honey can last for several months.
I made DIY gifts using an 80oz jar of honey, which is 5 pints. It took about 30-35 minutes. You can whip bigger amounts. However, it may just take longer.
Not always, but it certainly can. If it does occur, use a spoon and stir back together until combined.

Hi Ashley. Super thanks for this recipe. On which high speed did you set your KitchenAid to please? And for how many minutes was your mixer on this speed setting please? Just a little worried my KitchenAid might overheat if whipping for more than 20 minutes? Thanks in advance for your help 🙏😊💞
