How to Make Herb Flavor Bombs

Ingredient & Equipment Notes

Fresh Herbs: Choose whatever you have on hand that’s on its way out of peak freshness. This method will work will any fresh herbs you want to preserve.

Olive Oil: Use your favorite olive oil, whether it’s light or extra virgin- anything you have on hand is good to use!

Minced Garlic: Mince up garlic cloves, or use the jar of minced garlic from the fridge.

Ice Cube Tray: You can use any ice cube stray you have for this hack. You’ll be transferring the frozen cubes to a freezer-safe storage bag, so don’t worry about this ice cube tray being used for long.

Easy Step by Step

  1. Fill each cube halfway with chopped herbs of choice. Add 1 teaspoon minced garlic over the top then fill with olive oil. Make sure not to get it too full or it will be hard to transfer.
  2. Place the ice cube tray on a baking sheet and place it in the freezer overnight.
  3. Once frozen, remove each cube from the tray and store it in the freezer in a stasher bag.

Mac’s Pro Tips

Freezing Dill: Freezing dill is super easy! The same steps above apply, however, if you plan to use dill for future recipes like ranch dressing, you might want to use light olive oil that has a milder taste. You can also use refined Coconut oil (no taste) or Avocado Oil, which also is milder. Skip the minced garlic if preferred.

Freezing Basil: I have a feeling that freezing basil is going to be what most of these herb bombs are made from. How to preserve fresh basil is on everyone’s minds, because basil plants are cheap and Trader Joe’s makes them look so cute and easy to keep! If your basil is out of control, or just on its way out, freezing it is a great idea! Throw it in your tomato sauce for delicious marinara!

Can you freeze Parsley? Yes! While you might be used to seeing parsley as a garnish, it’s actually the perfect herb to use in Mediterranean dishes, sauces, and dressings!

Can you freeze Chives? Yes! If you want to freeze chives, like dill, it might be best to use a lighter oil to keep the taste profile mild. Avocado oil or light olive oil are excellent choices!

Freezing Rosemary: If you’re freezing rosemary, there’s a good chance you’re also going to be using sage and/or thyme for the recipe as well. If you have these herbs on hand, feel free to freeze them together to make a delicious flavor blend with the minced garlic!

FAQs

Can I use avocado oil instead of olive oil?

Absolutely! Whatever oil you prefer will work just fine. Even coconut oil will work. Just make sure you understand the various flavor profiles of the oils before you use them in your flavor bombs so you know how they will work with the recipes you want to make! Refined coconut oil has no coconut flavor, and both light olive oil and avocado oil are milder in flavor. Extra virgin olive oil has the strongest flavor and would work great in sauces.

How long will these herb flavor bombs last in the freezer?

The freezer extends the shelf life of these flavor bombs for so long! Once they’re frozen, you have 4-6 months to use them in your recipes.
